Service Evaluation of Medical Undergraduate Psychiatry Placement

Aims There are no clear guidelines for the optimal organisation of psychiatry placements medical undergraduates. Moreover, UK needs to enrol more trainees. This service evaluation aimed show that an efficient placement can improve attitudes students towards and increase their likelihood choose psychiatry. Methods We evaluated efficacy a new strategy 24 fourth-year from University East Anglia during academic year 2021/2022. The consisted having 4-week in one 3 wards at Norfolk Suffolk Foundation Trust Woodlands Unit (PICU, acute male female wards) with brief (one- two-day) rotations across wards, as well community team individual areas interest. afforded exposure different settings, pathologies levels severity, enough time allow integration into team, participation clinical therapeutic activities most important, observation patient longitudinal improvement. Multidisciplinary teams were included by presenting training win-win, we relied on good teaching culture our Trust. also offered programmed induction day, mid-placement meeting end-of-placement debrief. using Attitude Towards Psychiatry Questionnaire before after placement, measuring overall satisfaction. Results satisfaction score 5 point Likert scale was very (M = 4.58; SD 0.58). Mean ATP total significantly improved 116.50 (SD 9.49) 133.00 8.68) over maximum attainable 150 (F(1;23) 69.70, p < .001, ηp2= .75), 23 out 30 items individually well. reliability high Cronbach's alpha .81 .84 placement. question “I would like be psychiatrist” 2.54 3.25 (F(1, 23) 16.33, .42) answering “agree” or “strongly agree” 16.7% 45.8%. improvement positively correlated (R .528, .01). Conclusion undergraduates is valuable opportunity choosing specialty. present model toward these goals.
